2026 Girls Division II Preseason Top 20: Watterson Starts With Room to Breathe

Watterson owns the largest opening advantage in any of the eight preseason races, while Wadsworth, Avon, Aurora, Granville, and Bay organize the chase.

PODIUM WATCH | 2026 PRESEASON RANKINGS

RETURNING STRENGTH | SIMULATED CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD | PRESEASON STARTING POINT

The opening view

The first number that defines Girls Division II is 104. That is Watterson's simulated score, and no other team in the classification is within 100 points. Wadsworth begins second at 240, Avon third at 254, and the gap gives Watterson a significant preseason advantage. It also turns the chase behind the favorite into a compelling race of its own.

Avon brings a remarkably tight five runner spread. Aurora and Granville place important runners near the front. Bay sits one point behind Granville. Canal Winchester follows four points later. From third through seventh, only 18 points separate five teams. Boardman and Tallmadge complete the Top 10, but CVCA is close enough in eleventh to keep the cutoff active.

A large August lead does not make the season automatic. It means Watterson has the best returning baseline under this method. The rest of Division II has a clear target: reduce the late scoring numbers, strengthen the fifth position, and use sixth and seventh runners to take points away from the field.

How the rankings were created

These rankings use returning runners and recorded 2025 5K performances. Teams were placed in their official 2026 OHSAA divisions. The twenty five fastest eligible teams by five runner average formed each simulated field, with up to seven returners entered per team.

Five runners scored. Sixth and seventh runners displaced opponents and decided ties. The lowest score won, with ties settled by the sixth runner and then the seventh. The number beside a team is its simulated cross country score, not its total time or five runner average.

The recorded performances came from different courses, meets, weather conditions, and points in the 2025 season. No course adjustment was applied. The result measures returning strength through one consistent scoring model, but it does not guarantee what will happen when teams race in 2026.

Official Podium Watch Top 20: The Race Board

The Race Board keeps the official order while showing what creates it. Gap is the number of points separating a team from the team directly ahead. The fifth and sixth columns show scoring place, not runner time. Lower numbers are better.

The championship favorite

Watterson's advantage comes from completeness. Its first scorer supplies a near front score, the next four remain inside the first 39 places, and the sixth runner adds another useful displacement point before most teams have finished scoring.

Watterson scores 104 points from places 2, 16, 21, 26, and 39. Kaitlyn Van Zandt leads the returners at 18:03.01. Elsa Allen completes the scoring five at 19:25.00 and 39th in the simulation. The five runner average is 18:55.08, and the first to fifth spread is 81.99 seconds.

The depth continues because sixth runner Emma Drab places 56th and seventh runner Hadley Schilling places 100th. They can displace opposing scorers and give the lineup protection if its order changes.

How the Race Was Won

This view follows the current top five teams as each scorer is added. It is not a prediction of race order at every moment. It shows which part of the lineup creates the final simulated advantage.

Among the current top five, the scoring lead develops this way: after scorer 1, Wadsworth leads at 1; after scorer 2, Watterson leads at 18; after scorer 3, Watterson leads at 39; after scorer 4, Watterson leads at 65; after scorer 5, Watterson leads at 104. The leader owns a 35 point advantage after four scorers, and the fifth scorer adds another 101 points to the final margin.

The closest challengers

Wadsworth is second because four scorers establish a strong platform before a large fifth runner gap. Avon, Aurora, Granville, and Bay are clustered closely enough that their internal races may determine who becomes Watterson's primary challenger.

Wadsworth is number 2 with 240 points, 136 behind the leader. It gives away 3 points across the first two scorers, concedes another 32 through scorers three and four, and then gives away 101 at the fifth position. Hadley Dietz is the fifth returner and scores 140th. The five runner spread is 199.51 seconds. Maddie Hanson is the sixth runner at 162nd.

Avon is number 3 with 254 points, 150 behind the leader. It gives away 63 points across the first two scorers, concedes another 52 through scorers three and four, and then gives away 35 at the fifth position. Lauren Kershaw is the fifth returner and scores 74th. The five runner spread is 33.16 seconds. Lily Suter is the sixth runner at 122nd.

Aurora is number 4 with 264 points, 160 behind the leader. It gives away 12 points across the first two scorers, concedes another 76 through scorers three and four, and then gives away 72 at the fifth position. Haley Koch is the fifth returner and scores 111th. The five runner spread is 127.14 seconds. Jenny Kolta is the sixth runner at 149th.

The Fifth Runner Factor

The fifth scorer is where a strong front group becomes a complete team score. The place gap below compares each contender's fourth and fifth scorers. A smaller gap usually gives the lineup a steadier championship shape.

Granville has the smallest fourth to fifth place gap among the first five teams at 5. Wadsworth has the largest at 99, which identifies the clearest place where one advancing runner could reshape the top of the standings.

The battle inside the Top 10

Several teams inside the Top 10 are separated by only a handful of points. These are the groups most likely to change when one scorer moves through a pack.

The first close group is Avon at 254, Aurora at 264, Granville at 267, Bay at 268, and Canal Winchester at 272. Only 18 points cover the teams. Their fifth scoring places are Avon at 74th, Aurora at 111th, Granville at 97th, Bay at 99th, and Canal Winchester at 89th. One move from a fifth scorer could change the entire group.

The next scoring cluster is Big Walnut at 289, Boardman at 296, and Tallmadge at 302. Only 13 points cover the teams. Their fifth scoring places are Big Walnut at 107th, Boardman at 139th, and Tallmadge at 87th. One move from a fifth scorer could change the entire group.

The Displacement Report

Sixth and seventh runners do not score when the first five finish, but they still occupy places in the field. That can push an opponent's scorer backward, protect a team when its order changes, and decide a tie. These are the earliest sixth runners in the simulated field.

Sleepers outside the Top 10

These sleepers are selected from returning lineup evidence rather than reputation. Each has a visible route toward the Top 10.

Number 11 CVCA scores 324, which is 22 points from the current tenth place total. A scorer in 11th gives the lineup an early point advantage that can grow if the back of the five closes. The average is 19:45.96, the spread is 110.40 seconds, and the fifth scorer lands 102nd. Ryleigh Mason is the sixth runner at 118th.

Number 13 Cin. St. Ursula Acad. scores 332, which is 30 points from the current tenth place total. The first four scorers combine for 229 points before the fifth is added, leaving a specific closing target. The average is 19:53.17, the spread is 72.47 seconds, and the fifth scorer lands 103rd. Peyton Denton is the sixth runner at 104th.

Number 17 Bowling Green scores 361, which is 59 points from the current tenth place total. The first four scorers combine for 256 points before the fifth is added, leaving a specific closing target. The average is 19:59.67, the spread is 78.00 seconds, and the fifth scorer lands 105th. Rylee Ruehl is the sixth runner at 126th.

Honorable mentions

The honorable mentions are the next five teams in the same simulated standings. They are not selected separately. They finish from twenty first through twenty fifth after all scoring and displacement are complete.

RankTeamScore
21Col. DeSales415
22Hudson416
23Steele429
24Syl. Southview434
25Hartley440

The cutoff is close. Col. DeSales is only 8 points behind number 20 Turpin. Its fifth scorer places 117th, so even a modest move at the end of the scoring five can cross the line. Hudson follows with a fifth score of 128th and a five runner spread of 112.69 seconds.

Steele, Syl. Southview, and Hartley complete the honorable mention group. Their fastest route into the Top 20 is the same one visible throughout the standings: preserve the front, reduce the fifth score, and bring the sixth runner close enough to displace opponents or protect against a changed lineup.

What could change

Summer development, health, race execution, and normal improvement can change this order. One runner moving through a crowded pack can lower a team score while also displacing rival scorers.

The current lineups show several specific opportunities: Wadsworth currently has a 199.51 second spread and a fifth score of 140th, Avon currently has a 33.16 second spread and a fifth score of 74th, and Granville currently has a 113.57 second spread and a fifth score of 97th. A tighter fifth position or a stronger sixth runner could produce an immediate reward. The raw times still require context because courses, weather, meets, and timing within the season differed. No course adjustment was applied.

Final outlook

Watterson has earned substantial preseason separation, and its full five runner shape makes that lead more than a product of one star. Wadsworth has the next best score, while Avon through Canal Winchester form the classification's most compressed competitive band. The season will reveal which challenger can lower its fifth score without losing the front.
