The opening view

Milford begins the Division I season with the number one ranking and a scoring total that explains why. Milford posts 109 points behind the first finisher in the simulated field, then adds four more scorers inside the first 46 places. Mason is second at 154. Massillon Jackson is third at 173. Both challengers have clear strengths, but Milford starts with fewer exposed places across the full scoring five.

The middle of the Top 10 is almost a separate meet. Sycamore scores 190, Oak Hills 196, and Gahanna Lincoln 197. Six points cover fourth through sixth. Olentangy Liberty and Lancaster later enter another close exchange, while several teams outside the Top 10 have front runners capable of changing a race immediately.

For athletes, the rankings show how one teammate can lift the whole group. For families, they explain why a team with the fastest average is not automatically the team with the lowest race score. For coaches, the key numbers are the fifth scorer and the sixth runner, especially when 25 complete teams place as many as seven athletes into the same simulated field.

How the rankings were created

These rankings use returning runners and recorded 2025 5K performances. Teams were placed in their official 2026 OHSAA divisions. The twenty five fastest eligible teams by five runner average formed each simulated field, with up to seven returners entered per team.

Five runners scored. Sixth and seventh runners displaced opponents and decided ties. The lowest score won, with ties settled by the sixth runner and then the seventh. The number beside a team is its simulated cross country score, not its total time or five runner average.

The recorded performances came from different courses, meets, weather conditions, and points in the 2025 season. No course adjustment was applied. The result measures returning strength through one consistent scoring model, but it does not guarantee what will happen when teams race in 2026.

Official Podium Watch Top 20: The Race Board

The Race Board keeps the official order while showing what creates it. Gap is the number of points separating a team from the team directly ahead. The fifth and sixth columns show scoring place, not runner time. Lower numbers are better.

The championship favorite

Milford is first because its scoring starts with the best possible number and stays controlled through the fifth runner. Milford can absorb normal movement in the middle of the race without asking one late scorer to rescue the entire total.

Milford scores 109 points from places 1, 13, 22, 27, and 46. Elle Campbell leads the returners at 17:45.50. Schylar Sperl completes the scoring five at 19:23.89 and 46th in the simulation. The five runner average is 18:47.41, and the first to fifth spread is 98.39 seconds.

The depth continues because sixth runner Payton Maher places 76th and seventh runner Nora Lindley places 84th. They can displace opposing scorers and give the lineup protection if its order changes.

How the Race Was Won

This view follows the current top five teams as each scorer is added. It is not a prediction of race order at every moment. It shows which part of the lineup creates the final simulated advantage.

Among the current top five, the scoring lead develops this way: after scorer 1, Milford leads at 1; after scorer 2, Milford leads at 14; after scorer 3, Milford leads at 36; after scorer 4, Milford leads at 63; after scorer 5, Milford leads at 109. The leader owns a 6 point advantage after four scorers, and the fifth scorer adds another 39 points to the final margin.

The closest challengers

Mason and Massillon Jackson lead the chase, but the six point span from Sycamore through Gahanna Lincoln makes the podium conversation deeper than the first three names.

Mason is number 2 with 154 points, 45 behind the leader. It gives away 6 points across the first two scorers, matches the middle scoring pair, and then gives away 39 at the fifth position. Mitalee Godbole is the fifth returner and scores 85th. The five runner spread is 114.60 seconds. Evie Marvich is the sixth runner at 111th.

Mass. Jackson is number 3 with 173 points, 64 behind the leader. It gives away 35 points across the first two scorers, concedes another 22 through scorers three and four, and then gives away 7 at the fifth position. Paige Akers is the fifth returner and scores 53rd. The five runner spread is 36.80 seconds. Natalie Weiler is the sixth runner at 97th.

Sycamore is number 4 with 190 points, 81 behind the leader. It gives away 43 points across the first two scorers, concedes another 34 through scorers three and four, and then gives away 4 at the fifth position. Alaina Vergari is the fifth returner and scores 50th. The five runner spread is 28.00 seconds. Charlotte Busby is the sixth runner at 79th.

The Fifth Runner Factor

The fifth scorer is where a strong front group becomes a complete team score. The place gap below compares each contender's fourth and fifth scorers. A smaller gap usually gives the lineup a steadier championship shape.

Sycamore has the smallest fourth to fifth place gap among the first five teams at 3. Mason has the largest at 56, which identifies the clearest place where one advancing runner could reshape the top of the standings.

The battle inside the Top 10

Several teams inside the Top 10 are separated by only a handful of points. These are the groups most likely to change when one scorer moves through a pack.

The first close group is Sycamore at 190, Oak Hills at 196, and Gah. Lincoln at 197. Only 7 points cover the teams. Their fifth scoring places are Sycamore at 50th, Oak Hills at 66th, and Gah. Lincoln at 82nd. One move from a fifth scorer could change the entire group.

The next scoring cluster is Springboro at 289, Olen. Liberty at 300, and Lancaster at 309. Only 20 points cover the teams. Their fifth scoring places are Springboro at 106th, Olen. Liberty at 80th, and Lancaster at 110th. One move from a fifth scorer could change the entire group.

The Displacement Report

Sixth and seventh runners do not score when the first five finish, but they still occupy places in the field. That can push an opponent's scorer backward, protect a team when its order changes, and decide a tie. These are the earliest sixth runners in the simulated field.

No two teams in this classification finish with the same simulated score, but the sixth and seventh runners still create displacement throughout the field.

Sleepers outside the Top 10

These sleepers are selected from returning lineup evidence rather than reputation. Each has a visible route toward the Top 10.

Number 11 Watkins Memorial scores 312, which is 3 points from the current tenth place total. It begins with a scorer in 6th, so the clearest opportunity is reducing the 152nd fifth score. The average is 19:35.36, the spread is 181.12 seconds, and the fifth scorer lands 152nd. Jane Cisek is the sixth runner at 160th.

Number 12 Upper Arlington scores 318, which is 9 points from the current tenth place total. It begins with a scorer in 3rd, so the clearest opportunity is reducing the 136th fifth score. The average is 19:23.12, the spread is 169.36 seconds, and the fifth scorer lands 136th. Sonja Wooddell is the sixth runner at 140th.

Number 15 Dub. Jerome scores 390, which is 81 points from the current tenth place total. The first four scorers combine for 288 points before the fifth is added, leaving a specific closing target. The average is 19:52.01, the spread is 67.69 seconds, and the fifth scorer lands 102nd. Annabel Heitkamp is the sixth runner at 153rd.

Honorable mentions

The honorable mentions are the next five teams in the same simulated standings. They are not selected separately. They finish from twenty first through twenty fifth after all scoring and displacement are complete.

The cutoff is close. Stow-Munroe Falls is only 3 points behind number 20 Beavercreek. Its fifth scorer places 155th, so even a modest move at the end of the scoring five can cross the line. Wester. South follows with a fifth score of 125th and a five runner spread of 68.50 seconds.

Wor. Kilbourne, Pick. North, and Thom. Worthington complete the honorable mention group. Their fastest route into the Top 20 is the same one visible throughout the standings: preserve the front, reduce the fifth score, and bring the sixth runner close enough to displace opponents or protect against a changed lineup.

What could change

Summer development, health, race execution, and normal improvement can change this order. One runner moving through a crowded pack can lower a team score while also displacing rival scorers.

The current lineups show several specific opportunities: Mass. Jackson currently has a 36.80 second spread and a fifth score of 53rd, Sycamore currently has a 28.00 second spread and a fifth score of 50th, and Beavercreek currently has a 15.60 second spread and a fifth score of 98th. A tighter fifth position or a stronger sixth runner could produce an immediate reward. The raw times still require context because courses, weather, meets, and timing within the season differed. No course adjustment was applied.

Milford has the strongest opening case in Division I because it combines a first place scorer with a reliable path through five.
